I started detecting in September 2010 using a second hand Bounty Hunter Quick Draw 2. I found lots of coins and junk jewellery but soon realised I needed to upgrade to something better. I now use a Fisher F4, bought in November 2010.
Thanks to Ged (Peacehavens) in the UK for identifing the mystery object. It is indeed a Jews Harp, a musical instrument. Here are a couple of pics from the web. Its held by the round end with the 'forks' to the lips, you either hum or blow through the forks while plucking the middle bit.

WOW! That is one very unusual instrument. Check out how it is played on the You Tube clips - it's the players jaw bone that amplifies the sound....
